Description

First published in 1977 and later reprinted, The BOOK OF THE BERESFORDS came into being through the research, dogged determination and perseverance of its author Colonel Hugh de la Poer Beresford. It is a fascinating work tracing the senior line of the family from its earliest beginnings around the 11th century then following the various branches of the family as they spread far and wide with each succeeding generation.

In the writing of the book the author drew on years of research during which he amassed a huge amount of information, garnered from collections, histories, Parish registers, the College of Arms and various Pedigrees. He wrote to over 1,000 Beresfords in the British Isles and 218 overseas. From the over 1,058 letters that went back and forth he gathered a huge amount of detail which he incorporated into this volume.

Colonel De La Poer was at pains to point out that he did not consider the book as a history because ‘history demands complete accuracy and should rightly be regarded as a record of irrefutable facts’. As he said ‘This is obviously impossible when covering a span of some nine hundred years, and all one can do is to set out the known facts as accurately as possible and fill in the gaps with reasonable conjecture.’

With the amount of detail it covers, including well produced linked family trees, it is a MUST for anyone wanting to uncover their Beresford ancestry. Whilst recognising that it won’t necessarily have all the answers the author’s generosity of spirit gives lots of pointers and leaves room for personal research, thought and discovery.
